Key Characters:

Growth Form: Vines.

Stems: Stems twining or sometimes prostrate, herbaceous but woody toward base, up to 4 m or more long, smooth or muricate, glabrous or rarely villous at nodes.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Alternate. Blades ovate to orbicular in outline, 3–10 cm long and wide, palmately divided, usually to base into 5–7 lobes, the lobes lanceolate to ovate or elliptic, 3–5 cm long. Outer lobes sometimes bifid. Apex obtuse to acute, mucronulate. Base acute, cordate to truncate, petiolate, subsessile, or sessile. Surfaces glabrous, blades chartaceous. Margins entire. Petioles up to ca. 2/3 as long as blades. Pseudostipules present. True stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers 1 to numerous in lax dichasia, peduncles 5–80 mm long, pedicels 12–30 mm long. Flowers bisexual (perfect), actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx of 5 sepals, distinct, imbricate, herbaceous to subcoriaceous, ovate, 4-6.5 mm long, outer ones slightly shorter, glabrous, +/- verrucose, margins scarious, apex obtuse to acute, mucronulate, often somewhat enlarging in fruit but not markedly accrescent, persistent, occasionally accrescent. Corolla purple, bluish purple, or white with a purple center, funnelform, (3–)4.5–6 cm long. Stamens 5, distinct; included or rarely exserted; filaments inserted on corolla tube base alternate with corolla lobes; anthers dithecal, usually linear or oblong, extrorse. Ovary superior, 2–4-carpellate, usually with as many cells, placentation basal or basal-axile; ovules 2(4, 6) per cell, or ovary 1-celled and ovules 4, these erect, anatropous; style 1, filiform, simple or bifid, or sometimes with 2 distinct style; stigma globose or 2–3-lobed, the lobes globose.

Fruit: Fruit a subglobse capsules; 1-1.2 cm long; glabrous; dehiscent by 4 valves or rarely 6 valves; or splitting irregularly. Seeds black to tan; subglobose to ovoid; 4-6 mm long; densely short-tomentose; sometimes with long silky hairs along the margins.

Ploidy: 2n = 30

Habitat: Apparently a naturalized species in primarily open; dry; usually rocky; often disturbed areas.

Elevation Range: 0–670 m.
